South Regional Consultation on the necessity to amend The Tamil Nadu Police (Reforms) Act 2013

South Regional Consultation on the necessity to amend The Tamil Nadu Police (Reforms) Act 2013 held on Wednesday, 7th September 2016 at Tirunelveli. It was jointly organised by Human Rights Advocacy and Research Foundation, Vaanmugil and Campaign for Custodial Justice and Abolition of Torture.

It was agreed by the participants that:
Basic features of the amendments should be
•  Police Act should not give any coercive powers to police
• Police Act need not reflect already existing provisions in Criminal Procedure Code and Indian Penal Code
• Any breach of DK Basu guidelines should be punished severely
• Police department should act independently without interference, pressure from the political parties and bureaucrats

Representatives of the political parties who participated in this consultation agreed that Tamil Nadu Police (Reforms) Act 2013 need to be amended and assured to make it an issue in their respective local body election manifesto.
