Illegal mining of rare sand minerals:
Rare sand minerals are available in Ramnad, Nagapattinam, Madurai, Trichy, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Tuticorin districts. Mostly mining of rare minerals is happening in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. Most of mining companies get permission from TAMIN (Govt dept. incharge of mining) only for a small area of land but do illegal mining in the nearby Coastal poramboke land and destroy sand dunes. These companies pay just Rs 300/- for one ton and earn Rs 3 lakhs per ton of sand. They have dug sand upto 20 feet and have destroyed coastal ecology and fishing. Most of the people are affected by radiation related diseases and died due to cancer in the surrounding villages of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts.

Desalination Plant:

Two desalination plants with 100 Million Litre per day is functioning in Minjur and Sulerikattukuppam respevctively. Another 200 MLD desalination plant is proposed in perur village near sulerikatukuppam fishing village.

Impact of Desalination Plant:

• Sea Groynes and constructed into the sea for water intake and discharge pipeline causes
• Fishermen’s houses and buildings were washed and due to
• Sea Water intrusion nearby coastal villages causes salination of drinking water.
• Due to the outlet of coolant water from the Desalination Plant the catchment of fish has gone down which affects the livelihood of fisheries community.
• Sea is polluted due to discharge of hazardous chemicals and highly salinated water into the sea this also destroy many marine species and coastal ecology.

Illegal Shrimp Industries:

Thousands of Shrimp Industries functioning in Kanchipuram, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Tanjore, Tiruvarur and Ramnad Districts. Most of these Industries function without proper license. Aqua Culture Authority issue the licence for shrimp industries, but the authority cannot monitor the functioning of the shrimp industries. Shrimp Industries spoil the cultivate and coastal land because Tons of Salt and chemical using for the shrimp farms.
