16 Days Activism against Gender Based Violence

Women & Media: Challenges & Solutions

16 Days of activism against gender based violence is an annual international campaign from 25 November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day). It is a time to galvanize action to end violence against women and girls around the world.

As part of the campaign in 2017, HRF and PG Department of Human Rights and Duties Education, Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai jointly organized a series of three events on the theme “Protection of women in public spaces: Challenges and Solutions”.

In this series, Consultation on “Women and Media: Challenges & Solutions” was conducted on 1 December 2017 at Ethiraj College. The theme was how the media portrays women and does media industry provide safe/secure space for women to work? The consultation explored the challenges overcome by women or challenges that remain in media.

Kumaresan, Editor in Charge, Theekkathir, V. Saradha, Journalist, News 18, Kavin malar, Editor, Kunkumam Thozhi, Sugitha, Sr.Reporter, New 7, Vijai Anand, Journalist, News 18, Nachial Suganthi, Journalist, Karthika, Puthiya Thalaimurai participated as panelists. 63 students participated in the programme. This programme was coordinated by Porkodi, Social Media Coordinator, HRF. The Consultation went very well and the Panelists shared their experiences, challenges and how they blockbuster from the hard situations.

At the end of this programme, PG Department of Human Rights and Duties Education, Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai students collected district wise data on violence against women in Tamil Nadu based on Government Data 2011, and consolidated it as a report. Students presented and submitted the report to the media persons. Certificates were issued to those who took part in the data collection and analysis. Finally, Nithya, HoD, gave mementos to the panelists.
